This pancreatic cancer is the most common one suffered by ferrets. The disease causes abnormally high levels of insulin to be produced which causes sugar to be driven into the cells to rapidly. This causes a drop in the blood sugar level and the brain becomes sugar starved causing the ferret to behave in a strange way.
Early signs are the ferret will stare blankly for a few minutes, then return to normal, drooling or salivating, enlarged spleen, pawing frantically at the mouth, comatose behaviour and seizures.
If your ferret developes seizures you should administer honey and water by mouth until the pet is alert or seizures have stopped. Give his / her usual food or meat type baby food to get protein into the body and consult the veterinarian immediately.
